Close up from above looking down on the Dancer sculptures back, showing the partially carved and partially still bark-covered surface of the beech wood. The sun is shining in from the window on the right. Below the sculpture the base plate made from cements is visible, blurred by depth of field. The background is a white wall and a wooden floor.

The Dancer

The Beginning

Just 11 days before Corona became a pandemic we started our sabbatical. Our timing couldn't have been better although some things we had planned of course became impossible.

We spent a lot of time in our cottage in the woods and there, after cutting a small beech tree, I carved this sculpture.

That was quite significant, since I had worked for 25+ years almost exclusively in computer graphics and 3D design. Finding my way back to physical design and sculpting was a major shift and has changed my life profoundly since.

So this sculpture also represents how I want my life to be.
In spite of all struggles to always find back to balance, elegance and facility. After falls to quickly get up again and remember the dance, the joy, the light, finding my own ways.
Rough and authentic.

Front view of the Dancer sculpture, one Arm up and one straight to the right, showing areas with the bark still in place and organic flowing carved forms otherwise, contrasted by sharp edges and the outlines of the bark. The surface in the carved areas is only slightly smoothed in parts and still shows the original carving marks in others. Mounted on a cement base and fixed with wooden wedges. Dark grey background.
